Amidst this pursuit, rumors of a secretive project within OpenAI, dubbed Project Q, emerged, sparking both excitement and trepidation.

In 2019, Reuters reported on Project Q, alleging that OpenAI researchers had made a significant breakthrough in developing AGI. The discovery reportedly centered around a new AI model called Q* (pronounced Q-Star), capable of solving mathematical problems previously considered intractable for computers. This revelation sent shockwaves through the AI community, raising questions about the potential implications of such an advanced AI system.

The development of Q* reportedly led to internal divisions within OpenAI. Some researchers expressed concerns about the potential dangers of AGI, advocating for a cautious approach to its development. Others, enthralled by the potential benefits, advocated for a more aggressive pursuit of AGI. These contrasting perspectives mirrored the broader debate surrounding AGI, highlighting the ethical and existential considerations that accompany such powerful technology.

In June 2020, OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, was ousted from the company. The ousting was reportedly linked to a disagreement between Altman and the board of directors regarding the company’s direction. Altman’s optimistic stance on AGI’s potential clashed with the board’s more cautious approach, leading to an irreconcilable rift.

The potential dangers of AGI are undeniable, as its misuse could pose catastrophic threats to humanity.
